The V.O.R.T.E.X. Challenge

Last Monday at Devils Ridge, YHC started testing a workout concept: turning the AO’s name into an acronym then searching the Exicon to match the letters. The result for Round 1 was The D.E.V.I.L.S. Challenge. Upon reflection, there was some room for tweaking – we ran out of time at Devil’s Ridge, so key adjustments were trimming the travel distances, cutting the counts slightly and keeping the PAX in motion without a break to leverage as much of the clock as possible. That’s part of the art and science that makes Q’ing so enjoyable: creatively experimenting to optimize every minute we’re out in the gloom…and always feeling grateful that there are a group of men willing to engage in those experiments.

On this Tuesday morning, 16 PAX of Vortex valiantly volunteered to participate in Round 2: The V.O.R.T.E.X. Challenge.

WARM-UP

  • Mosey around half the soccer field
  • SSH IC x 20
  • Windmills IC x 10
  • WMH IC x 10
  • Mountain Climbers IC x 15

THE THANG

Partner up and complete the following on four corners of half field:

  • Vacuum Cleaners (wheelbarrow 5 crawls, then 1 derkins, flapjack at corners)
  • O.P.P.s (20 Overhead Claps in squat position while partner does 20 Plank Jacks, Partner Carry to next corner, flapjack exercises / carrier at corners)
  • Ranger Merkins (hands closer to rib cage) x 10 per corner, Run between
  • Travolta Merkins x 10 (Saturday night fever, baby – merkin, right hand point to the sky, then back through and across the body, merkin, switch arms); 5 Traveling Burpees followed by run to next corner
  • EKG Merkins x 5 (push off so both hands and feet get some air), E2K x 10 (oblique crunches – left foot on right knee, right arm to left knee…switcheroo), then Empty Wheelbarrows (Crab Walk with partner holding legs)
  • X Jumps (essentially a star jump, squat then jump with arms and legs fully extended to form an X) across the diagonal of the field; X Cross Sit Ups x 20 (simultaneously lift opposite leg and arm to meet above core, keep both straight as possible)

All PAX completed the program with 1 minute to spare!
