Thanksgiving Football…and Merkins…and Burpees

November 22, 2018

WHEN: 11/22/2018
QIC: Griswold
PAX: Green Acres, Paper Boy, Spooky, Rambler, Bogey, Singlet, Rebar, Catskill, Wawa, Germ, Flenderson, John Boy, Sweet Peas, Nacho, Griswold.

Paradise and AMRAP have been having some great convergences for the past few months. The numbers have been great, the energy has been awesome, and it has been an all around good time. YHCs hope was today would be no different, and it turned out that the only way to put a minor hiccup in that would be an unreasonable amount of SSH (see warmup).

Being that Thanksgiving has two guarantees, football and turkey, and YHC couldn’t figure out how to work a turkey into the Q (without being wasteful) football was the plan. Plus some merkins and burpees, just because.

The Warmup

SSH x 101 IC (this seemed to get everyone a little sour as the mumble chatter was decidedly salty for several minutes after)

2 Minute Merkin Test – Max Merkins in 2 min. (Full disclosure YHC did not start the timer on time, the 2 minutes was an estimate, sorry boys.)

The Thang

All the PAX lined up at one end of the parking lot and had to do some math. Using the number each of us had for the Merkin test, we took a % of that number and did merkins, lunge walked to the third arrows, did that same amount of merkins and lunge walked back. This was done as a pyramid. It may have been a small pyramid, but it was a pyramid. Here is the full rundown:

25% of your max

Lunge walk to arrows

25% of your max

Lunge walk back

50% of your max

Lunge walk to arrows

Mosey to the field for some AMRAP football. What is AMRAP football you ask? Well, it is football played with a 9.25# football full of sand.

Rules were: Once a PAX has the ball they can move 2 steps, then have to pass. Every drop or change of possession meant 5 burpees for everyone. A score meant 5 burpees for the offense and 10 for the defense.

-Team 2 scored an early touchdown for a 7-0 lead. A huge amount of turnovers and drops lead to a lot of burpees.

-Team 1 flipped field position by picking up Germ when he had the ball and carrying him a good distance. After review this was upheld as GERM only took two steps, he was in the air the rest of the time.

-Eventually Rebar pulled a 2.5 step to even the game at 7. Shortly after that Green Acres was able to punch in a late touchdown to ice the game.

-The burpee total was high. Possessions were an average of about 30-45 seconds and there were 3 scores.

BoM:

As I was getting up around 0415 this morning and walking out of the house tired and sore I had a moment to think about what this same time of day on Thanksgiving looked like in my younger years. Thanksgiving Eve is, by far, the biggest party night of the year, and I made the most of it for a while. Not that long ago 0400 on Thanksgiving was stumbling into the house after a night of questionable decisions, now 0400 is stumbling out of the house for a morning of questionable decisions. How far I have come! And I wouldn’t trade it for a thing. I could not be happier to have gotten to a place where this is my 0400 on Thanksgiving.

That being said, lets take the time to think about where we are and where we were today. It is easy to pay lip service to the things we are thankful for on Thanksgiving. Maybe we jot a few things down quickly, or go around the table and name something. Today I ask all of you to spend some time reflecting on what you are thankful for. Take a few minutes out to identify that person and think specifically about how they have gotten you to where you are today and how that makes you a better man. If we spend time reflecting we can have a true appreciation and be truly thankful. We will be more likely to show this appreciation in a meaningful way.

As always I am grateful, and thankful to have the opportunity to lead you men. Iron sharpens iron.
