Stars & Stripes

June 15, 2018

WHEN: 06/14/2018
QIC: My Little Pony
PAX: 16 seed, Bells, Buffer, Malware, Weed N Feed, Yugo (FNG), Falwell, Floyd, Cardiac, Kia, MLP

The energy was high as YHC rolled into Tobacco Road primed to honor Ol’ Glory on Flag Day.  YHC was pleased to see that there were 9 others waiting with shared enthusiasm including an FNG rocking a U.S. Navy shirt and admitting that he liked physical punishment.  He picked the perfect day for a patriotic beatdown!  Cardiac came in on two wheels because of a plumbing emergency and rounded out our group of 11.

Warm-up

SSH x 20

GM x 10

IW x 20

WMH x 10

Slow Squat x 10

Slow Merkin x 10

We moseyed to the middle of the turf soccer field and YHC proceeded to explain the plan.  We were going to turn the field into a giant U.S. flag, complete with 13 stripes and 50 stars.

Partner-up for some Dora.

One partner sprints from midfield to the endline.  Other partner remains at midfield and performs exercise called by YHC.  When first partner returns, flip flop, and second partner sprint to other endline (to make a complete stripe across the field) and first partner performs the called exercise.  Continues until team reaches a total of 50.  We did this 13 times with 13 different exercises:

  1. Merkins
  2. Squats
  3. Wide grip merkins
  4. Sumo squats
  5. Diamond merkins
  6. Jump squats
  7. Hand release merkins
  8. Monkey humpers
  9. Dry Docks
  10. WWII’s
  11. American Hammers
  12. Overhead Claps
  13. Tuck Jumps

At one point, we broke up the routine with a bear crawl around the center circle as a shout-out to the original flag with the 13 colony stars arranged in circle and also to catch our breathe.

With our stripes completed, it was time to put the stars on our flag.  We moseyed over the far corner of the field and lined up with partners on the end line.  Each PAX (5) performed 10 traveling burpees to put the stars out (5 x 10 = 50).  There was some relief from the group that there are only 50 stars on the flag and a couple of jokes about forgetting Puerto Rico, but the PAX didn’t realize YHC had more up his sleeve thanks to Wikipedia.

Apparently, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., both have voted to become states (not sure what the hold up is) and in November, Californians will be voting to determine if they want to remain one state or break-up into California, North California and South California.  You know what that means?  More stars on the flag!!!  To make sure that the workout will age well and remain historically accurate, we performed (5) 8-count body builders in cadence for the potential new states.

Mosey back for Mary:

  • Ring of Fire 10-count alternating plank and 6-inch hold
  • LBC x 20
  • J-Lo x 10 (picked this one up from the Apex crew this week and it’s brutal)
  • Flutter Kick x 20
  • 5 more 8-count body builders to finish

Great to see strong numbers at TR, let’s keep it going.  Floyd’s out the next two weeks, so the large number of PAX who try to avoid interacting with him can post at TR without fear.

Shoutout to FNG Yugo! 62 years strong and pushed through a high intensity first workout. RESPECT, expect to see you in the gloom again soon!  Many names were suggested but he liked them, so we had to dig deep to arrive at Yugo (Born in Detroit, said Henry Ford was a hero…what’s the opposite of auto innovation?…Yugo)
