Uncle Mot’s Gifts to UNC

July 27, 2018

WHEN: 07/27/2018
QIC: Beano
PAX: Avalanche, Rebar, Blackball, Slug, Grunge, Ma-te, Nightshift, Goat Cheese

Being a Q is an awesome experience.  It’s fun to plan and piece together your workout like a puzzle. And on your scheduled day to lead, it’s very exhilarating to share what you created with the rest of the PAX.  I always enjoy the exercise portion of a workout, but it’s also very cool to see the different themes and progressions guys will put together to create and lead a workout.  I believe with each Q, a man is truly opening up and sharing a small piece of himself with the group (personality, profession, hobbies, values, etc.).  You get a great workout with each post, and if you pay close enough attention, you may also learn a ton of cool things about one of your brothers in the community.  To all Churham Q’s, thanks for the motivation and inspiration you provide the PAX each day.  Your energy is contagious, and it gives us all an essential spark we need to start each day off the right way.

At West End this morning, 3 PAX started off with a 30-minute EC Ruck around Carrboro (Avalanche, Rebar, and Beano).  The three rotated carrying 60-lb. sandbag and 16-lb. sledgehammer for a little added spice.

For the Main Event, we paid homage to UNC alumnus and philanthropist, John Motley Morehead III. The ‘meat’ of the workout took place at the Morehead Planetarium, with the two pieces of bread on each side being a ~1-mile run to and from the planetarium.

WARM UP: SSH, Windmills, Merkins, Prisoner Squats, Good Mornings, 1-minute OYO Stretching in prep for run

THE THANG:

1.1-mile Run to Morehead Planetarium

  • PAX split into two groups for Indian Run (one group of four and one group of five)
  • Indian run allowed PAX to push themselves on run, while also staying together
  • 3/4 of way to destination, Indian run groups imploded and some PAX used the early energy of the day to push the pace and arrive at the planetarium quicker

Heavy Metal History Lesson – Morehead Planetarium

  • PAX gathered weights (strategically dropped off earlier by Beano beside a tree in front of planetarium) and carried them to circle up around the sundial
  • Brief discussion of John Motley Morehead III as a group (chemist and founder of Union Carbide, discovered acetylene gas, and calcium carbide, etc.)
    • 3 – 8-count Bodybuilders (in honor of Uncle Mot ‘III’)
    • 20 bicep curls (using weights) and 20 dips on sundial (in honor of Uncle Mot’s discoveries in science and metallurgy)
  • Brief discussion of astronaut training at Morehead Planetarium (1959-late 1970’s)
    • PAX partner up to:
      • ‘Orbit’ around sundial parking lot – one partner walks 1/4 of parking lot, maintaining weight overhead, while other stays beside them whole time doing backwards, high-knees; flapjack at each corner of parking lot and continue (done for one full lap)
    • Return with weights to sundial
    • 3 – 8 count Bodybuilders
    • 6 – Star Jumps (in honor of astronaut training)
    • 20 bicep curls and 20 dips on sundial
    • PAX partner up to:
      • ‘Gemini’ (space mission) Partner Carry around sundial parking lot; at halfway point, partners flapjack and continue orbit around parking; all pairs completed two orbits around parking lot
  • Discussion of date Morehead Planetarium opened to the public (May 10, 1949)
    • 3 – 8-count Bodybuilders
    • 6 – Star Jumps
    • 20 – bicep curls (with weight) and 20 dips on sundial
    • 49 – WWII’s (to honor year open to the public and German company that created first optic device used in planetarium)
    • 15 – Peter Parker’s on sundial
  • Brief discussion of John Motley Morehead III donating the Bell Tower to UNC
    • 10 – kettle’bell’ swings, followed by sprint around parking lot (80% speed), ending with 10 more kettle’bell’ swings (in honor of Bell Tower)
    • 5 – kettle’bell’ swings, followed by sprint around parking lot (80% speed), ending with 5 more kettle’bell’ swings
    • 20 bicep curls (with weight) and 20 dips on sundial
  • Weights returned by PAX to tree on Franklin St. where the originally found them

1.1-Mile Run Back to Fleet Feet

  • ‘Gut Check Intervals’ – PAX began run back to Fleet Feet.  The fastest PAX were instructed to push themselves; however, it was required to ‘gut check’ their location relative to the last runner in group at each major intersection/stop light on the way back.  They were required to double back at each light to meet up with the ‘Six’.  Only at that point could they resume their speedy run back towards Fleet Feet.  The Franklin Street route required the ‘stallions’ in the PAX to double back a total of 12 times.  For those fast PAX that wanted a cardio push, this last section gave it to them.

Review Quiz

Upon return, Beano gave the PAX a 5-question quiz from the history lesson covered over the course of the workout.  Unannounced plan was for PAX to do a burpee for every incorrect answer. Well, the PAX did a solid job listening and retaining the information and got all five questions right.  So Slug had a great suggestion for the PAX to do 5 burpees in celebration of getting all questions right.  This was further documented proof that all of us are certifiably insane.
