This is my Log. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

May 21, 2019

WHEN: 05/20/2019
QIC: Bunyan
PAX: Stubbs, Chum, Skynyrd, Johnboy, Closer, Duplo, Petri, Yanni, Griswold, Brotox, Rambler, Cabaret, Shut In

Various EC/Pre-ME things go on. YHC arrives and unloads a 9′ long round of cedar, replete with rusty cut nail and 1 galvanized siding nail. Petri assists. The Log is deposited in the parking lot, a perfect circle is formed and we’re off to the races.

Warm up

-SSH x 20

-Abe Vigoda x 15

-Imperial Walkers x 20

There seems to be 14 of us.

Line up and Indian run into the wild confines of BC, bringing along the baton. Once the group (and yhc) figures out how the hell this will work, we shamble away up the hill. 3 dudes at the back of the line have the cedar. The whole group moseys forward. The cedar is carried to the front of the line, and then passed back through the line to the rear three, who then rinse and repeato.

The pax arrive where they’re going: the hill. The log is put down.

Someone counts to 10. Three groups of 4 are formed, one of 2. Reform groups. 2 of 4, 2 of 3. The groups name themselves. Meet:

“penis” skynrd and 2 or 3 other pax

“dead ass last” bunyan and 2 other pax

“alpha”:  rambler and 2 or 3 other pax

YHC failed to get the name of the last team, even though yanni told him later. This team consisted of yanni and 2 or three other pax.

Penis decides a log exercise, and executes, while the remainder of the pax execute some other exercise.

Rotation occurs.

Log exercises:

-situps with log on chest

-overhead log, squats

-elevated merkins

-some other things lost to the fog of war

non-log folks:

-mosey around hill

-slow merkins

-goofy thing (john boy)

-raise up on your toes (Johnny Dramas)

-diamond merkins

-some other things not worthy of being written in the history books

Penis is in charge, as it always is.

After some amount of time, our intrepid warriors head back to the AO, in the same Indian log run fashion, with slightly different route.

Never retrace your steps. The log is gently put back in yhc’s car (thanks y’all.)

BOM:

Medal of Honor Citation for:

“Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy

Citation

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphys team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers, who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between

30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. Realizing the impossibility of communicating in the extreme terrain, and in the face of almost certain death, he fought his way into open terrain to gain a better position to transmit a call. This deliberate, heroic act deprived him of cover, exposing him to direct enemy fire. Finally achieving contact with his Headquarters, Lieutenant Murphy maintained his exposed position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team. In his final act of bravery, he continued to engage the enemy until he was mortally wounded, gallantly giving his life for his country and for the cause of freedom. By his selfless leadership, courageous actions, and extraordinary devotion to duty, Lieutenant Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”

AYE.

Moleskin:

We’re getting to that time of year when our country celebrates Memorial Day –a perfect time to laze by the pool, drink a beer.

Complain about who knows what. At the current moment, there are thousands of men and women out there, doing horrible, terrible, really hard things in our names. Many come home and get to sit by the pool.

Some, do not. All I know about Navy Seals is they do shit with logs as pt. buds school. Oh, and they shot and killed osama bin laden and then dumped him in the ocean. Things are always complicated. YHC learned about Michael Murphy’s story some time a couple of years ago. Read about him here, if you’d care to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Murphy

Murphy died in Operation Red Wings, along with two other members of his 4 man Seal Team, and 16 folks, 8 Seals and 8 Air Force special operators, who came in on a helicopter that answered Murph’s call for help.

Rest In Peace, Brother.
