Introduction: YHC has been out of commission for a while, sadly a recurring theme. In my absence, Sunnyside, my baby, raised from infancy and nurtured over the past 2 years, has been suffering from neglect. This is a combination of poor weather, kids’ sports contests, and probably a decent amount of me being unavailable to EH my F3 mates into Q’ing in my absence. Time to brush off the dust and get this thing going again.

Warm-up: The usual suspects: SSH, WMH, Imperial Walkers, Forward and Reverse Arm Circles. I threw some Smurf Jacks in for fun.

The Thang: After a warmup lap to review the day’s challenge, we assembled at the starting point. Before each “trial” below, borrowed loosely from a summer blockbuster adventure movie, I made the group select one of the 4 options, “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style. I had a specific order in mind for the four trials, and the group would be penalized with 5 Burpees, 10 Merkins,  and 15 WWII’s (in sequential order) for choosing the trials out of sequence. Improbably, the group failed to choose the correct trial each time, so we did all of the above penalty exercises.   

Tomb Raider progression: walk on first section of wall near playground, walk backwards on second section, and bear crawl on third section (adults can modify with bear crawl on second section and lizard walk on third section).

Ninja progression: cross monkey bars (adults cross taller bar). Kids dodge swings on swing set (with adult supervision for small 2.0’s!), crawl through tube, then go down slide. Adults SSH while waiting.

Bridge/swamp progression: Plank lineup sequentially to cross the street (hot lava). Completion achieved once all had traversed and held plank. Derkin-dip combo on picnic tables, 20 SC each (kids/adults working together: kids do plank or merkins as modification). Re-cross the street, now a dangerous swamp with alligators, with sequential boat-canoe OYO (snapping alligator jaws). As before, trial achieved once all had traversed.  

Final test: Indiana Jones: mosey to main lawn, and once parents have positioned themselves in a gauntlet up the hill, the kids sprint through the gauntlet towards the jade idol. If any 2.0 is hit with a tennis ball, the group has to stop and do a team Burpee for each hit. Then adults had to crab walk (groan) the same gauntlet, with 2 Burpees per direct hit.

As often happens with Sunnyside, there was an impromptu game of Sharks and Minnows that broke out at the end. Don’t fight it.

Mary: Paper Jam led us with 10 LBC’s. Then Brotox led us with 10 American Hammers.

COT: Kids of all ages need to continue to look for unpleasant chores to do each day. Kids, try doing one each day before being told. Aye!
