Five Minutes of Merkins and More

The Thicket was YHC’s first AO over 5 years ago and there have been tons of memorable workouts over the years. It’s always an honor to Q here. Today’s workout wouldn’t necessarily be memorable, but grounded in getting reps in and working muscles that we don’t usually exercise with the awesome supply of blocks stored at the AO.

The weather was on the chilly side of perfect. But given all of the rain we’ve had lately, I’ll take a clear morning.

EC consisted of Murph training and a rucking group. Everyone converged at 5:30 precisely to start the workout. We were able to welcome one FNG – Beaujolais’s dad who was in town from France. Our FNG might take the prize for the coolest occupation yet. He’s a truffle farmer! Unfortunately, he didn’t bring any samples. After the disclaimer, we got started.

The Warm-Up:

  • Good Mornings x 10 IC
  • Mountain Climber x 20 IC
  • Imperial Walker x 10 IC
  • Arm Circles x 10 IC
  • Reverse AC x 10 IC
  • Lap around the parking lot

The Thang:

Thang 1 – 5 Minutes of Merkins

  • Inspired by the challenge laid down last winter by Bright Idea to do 5 minutes of Merkins for 30 days. During the 30 days, you’re asked to make a 1% improvement in the number you can achieve.
  • For this routine, we’d do AMRAP 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off for 4 minutes. The 5th minute was 1 full minute so that the beasts in the group could exhaust their Merkins.

Thang 2 – Blocks

  • Mosey to the block pile and grab one.
  • Escalator reps 10 – 20 – 30 – 40 with a farmers carry of the block between sets to the end of the parking lot.
  • Exercises:
    • Squat Thrusts x 10
    • Curls x 20
    • Rows x 30 (15 on each arm)
    • Squats x 40

Thang 3 – Block Obstacle Course

  • Line the blocks up in a line (or close to a line)
  • Each PAX takes turns bear crawling through the course
  • Once complete reverse and crab walk back

Mary:

  • Flutter kicks x 20 IC
  • Heels to Heaven x 20 IC (Go Heels!)
  • Ring of Fire (each PAX Merkins x 3)

COT:

  • The 5 minutes of merkin routine and the 1% challenge from last year is a great reminder that F3 is about improvement in Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Plus, leadership, community, and family. Go pick one thing you want to improve on this week. It’s through practice and focus that you’ll see the gains.
