YHC just wanted a day where F3 was less than 10 minutes away.

After posting for the first time in February of 2016 and in the months that followed where YHC went from casual poster to active participant, YHC had always wanted to get F3 going closer to home (North Durham, but technically the address is in Orange County). Driving 15-20 min on average for F3 is always worth it, but it does take up time in the morning, gas in the tank and a whole lot of motivation to get going.

Fortunately PAX like Mr. Brady, Soda Popinski, and Chubbs had the same desire to have an AO north of I-85 so our commutes would be shorter. Sure we’d love to see the growth and development of male leadership in the community, but also an extra 15 min of sleep is a great thing. Then you have guys like Happy Gillmore and Roach that basically know everyone in Croasdaile and North Durham and eventually we’ve built ourselves a strong group of regulars. Then Shake-It moved up here and the workouts got serious.

So after some months of planning, an inspirational mixed drink on YHC’s 34th birthday, and some tests that involved having Roach crawl through ant hills, 9 PAX showed up last year for the first Hurricanrana beatdown, we haven’t looked back! We had 14 today and we introduced the official North Durham Board of Pain to the mix.

Warm Up-

  • 20 SSH and 5 Catalina Wine Mixers so everyone knew what they were. Then mosey to bus loop to the board of pain.

The Thang –

Hurricanrana is not the first AO to have a board of pain, but our board is the worst of the bunch. YHC did research on other sites boards, put it all in an excel and spent Friday and Saturday last weekend mulling over what would be just the dumbest and hardest set you could do. We clearly had the right answer – 100 Catalina Wine-Mixers as your second exercise will just kill all mumblechatter and morale you have going.

Here’s a picture of our board so you can see what we did.

The PAX that get’s furthest down the board without numbers modification keeps the board for a Q in North Durham in the future. Sadly, this went to Chowdah who has the Q on December 5th. YHC is nervous.

Most PAX had finished burpees when a car rolled up and an FNG jumped out and started in with the PAX. He just stepped in to the insanity like it was nothing (YHC would have turned my car around and rolled on home).

How to make a successful Board of Pain Q:

  1. Research – find all the backblasts you can with former BoP workouts and list them out. Exercises and numbers. Find the averages and then do more. Most boards have 18 exercises, ours had 19.
  2. Ask Someone Else – Buffay and Pusher have both led BoP’s locally and gave me some good advice.
  3. Experience – Make sure the board is legible and intimidating so no one decides to break it in half midway through the workout.
  4. Music – make a playlist. Ask yourself – “What would get Roach fired up?” Here’s mine [LINK]
  5. Decorate – F3 sends you 1 sticker for every shirt you buy. I only have so many cars and water bottles. So slap one on the board and now it looks cool!

Mary

Most PAX were finishing flutters and so we jumped right into flutter-mary.

  • Scissors, Rosalitas (that woke up the PAX), Heels to heaven, Outlaws (both directions), and Ring of fire 5-count leg holds.

Right after this our FNG had to run, so he was off. We didn’t get to name him because he was out so quick. L.I.F.O. or In-n-Out are my short-list of names.

Top Ten Hurricanrana Moments of the Year –

  1. 9 VQs in one year at one site! Soda, Chubbs, Green Egg, 3-Peat, Scrooge, Roach Chowdah, Frozen Peas, and Crean!
  2. Roach vs anthills at our soft launch
  3. Chubb’s Hill
  4. Soda Popinski guaranteeing that there would be NO SNOW on January 17th, the day that it snowed 21+ inches
  5. Four straight weeks in August and September, of numbers over the 18 PAX threshold
  6. Co-Q month – a great idea until you realized that it’s two Q’s giving 100% effort 2x per workout
  7. Tons of guests from Chapel Hill and Chatham Co – especially PAX that come all the way out to Q too!
  8. Our special Croasdaile front-9 run, in honor of Bryan, a friend of F3 that lost his battle with cancer
  9. Avalanche’s Ric Flair tribute Q.
  10. All of the PAX that have already earned a patch and all the PAX that are lined up to earn theirs too!
