Bastille-10-22

October 22, 2021

WHEN: 10/22/2021
QIC: Sir Mix-A-lot
PAX: Cauliflower, Fingers, Harlequin, Homes, Manafort, Nacho Libre, Plinko, Rambler, Sweet Peas, Turnpike, Zika
Fueled by a breakfast of Outer Banks Granola, I was super excited to be back at Bastille to celebrate the pivotal role that Southern Village Community Park played in the French Revolution. (I still don’t know the origins of this AO’s name). Oh yeah, and also to make people do a bunch of burpees….
Warmup: SSH, Imperial Walkers, Hillbilly squats, 10 slow count merkins, 30 sec shake and stretch
The Thang
Mosey to circle by the pond. Pair up. Partner 1 runs 1 lap while partner 2 does exercise then switcheroo. Repeat until the team has collectively finished 100 burpees, 200 merkins, and 300 air squats. Musical accompaniment: “Detroit Rock City” by Kiss and “Avalanche” by Albert Collins. Both of these songs, channeling Drew Magary, make me want to run through a brick wall when I hear them.
Fellowship lap.
“Roxanne” (The Police). Maintain low squat for entire song. Briefly stand up with each “Roxanne”.
Mosey back to start.
Mary
“Thunderstruck” (Steve ‘n’ Seagulls cover). Hold plank for entire song. Perform 1 merkin every time the word “thunder” is sung. There were many grunts and groans.
20 4-count flutter kicks

It is wonderful to revisit F3 Churham. Despite moving 2 years ago, it feels like I have not been gone at all in many ways. Maybe this is due to the strength of the brotherhood here, the fact that I have been lurking on Slack and WhatsApp, or a weird Covid-induced time distortion. Probably it is a combination of all of these things. In any case, I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with old PAX and meeting new ones. One thing I have noted is that some PAX have not re-engaged as things opened up again. I encourage everyone to reach out to these brothers to welcome them back and to see if everything is okay. There is a great tribe/community here, and it would be unfortunate to let people slip away in silence.
Time away from Churham has provided me some opportunity for reflection and has given me a real appreciation for F3. The quotation below captures so many aspects about what F3 inspires in me and what I see in so many of you. Go out and live it and make Churham a better place. AYE!
“Things of the spirit are what count:
brotherhood – in a day when there is too much hatred at home and abroad;
cheerfulness – in a day when the pessimists have the floor and cynics are popular;
service – in a day when millions are interested in getting or grasping, rather than giving.”
