Hard to believe that 4 years ago I would stumble upon a group of men that would convince me to do ridiculous stuff such as GoRuck Toughs and Spartans. Or make me like pushing myself to find limits I hadn’t in awhile or never had for that matter. Or enjoy being around smelly, sweaty men in the morning joking and encouraging each other to do one more. And me get up at 430am?!? Well that was just crazy talk. But it did happen, 4 years ago on Veterans Day. A neighbor convinced me after months of prodding to come out to this thing called F3.
Pleather led the Q and was doing a tribute to our Brave Men and Women who served our country valiantly, some making the ultimate sacrifice. It was based on a workout I never heard of, The Murph. You all know the story of him and the workout he did daily but back then it was new to me. Pleather would do a version of it incorporating Laurel Ridge, a nice 2ish mile stretch right beside the Rameses AO. I’d love to say I killed my first time out but, like a lot of us, it almost killed me. But I’ll never forget it as my neighbor and a man I never met before made sure I made it back up that hill, encouraging me the whole way. That’s when I learned what this thing was really all about; Not just strangers working out together but men helping each other out and leaning on each other’s strengths. At that point I knew I had to come back for more. And I knew I had to do that same workout to honor my 4 yr journey and hopefully prove I could finish it this time…

I’d like to say I remember all the details of Pleathers WO, but a lot of that day was a blur. I did remember the route and some of the stops for PT, And of course I know what a Murph is now so I did a mini version of it.
Headed down Laurel Ridge. Stopped at first set of rock walls we found. Dips x 10, Merkins x 20, Squats x 30. Kept heading down the ridge for about a 1/4 mile, found next stone wall. Repeated exercises. Keep going down stopping right before the end again for more of same exercises. Reached the stop sign and headed back up. Stopped back by each stone wall and repeated exercises but this time cut in half for the first 2 on the way up (5,10,15). Reached last stone wall near the top and went back to full 10, 20, 30. Reached the top of Laurel Ridge then headed back down to parking lot with enough time to get another full set on the steps. But not before making sure the “six” was picked up, as I was that “six” 4 yrs ago.
This brought us to around 2.5 miles, 60, dips, 120 Merkins, and 180 squats. Not a lot I know but a lot more than I could do in 45 minutes 4 yrs ago… and we still had time for Mary.

YHC took us out and is thankful for this group of Misfits that brought me out, that make me keep coming, and for making sure I always finish. For all this I’m truly grateful. And special thanks to D squared and that “stranger” Subprime who got me through my first one 4 yrs ago.
