BOM
The sport of SwimRun is a community of people who encourage each other and help each other, it’s not about gaining a competitive edge over your rivals. Much like F3 it’s a very supportive community and naturally YHC favors that over the other athletic scenes.
At my last SwimRun event up at Hanging Rock state park 2 things happened that embodied the spirit of F3 and the sense of community.

After everyone but the last team had finished the race and were waiting, the announcer called everyone over to the finish line to cheer the final competitors across the finish line. It was was awesome to see everyone giving the last place finishers a bigger and more boisterous welcome that the first place finishers received. True supportive F3 style camaraderie.

During the pre race meeting, a man stood up and told us the story of his partner who was diagnosed with brain cancer. Being optimistic, the partner said don’t worry about me I’ll recover and be back out there real soon. Unfortunately cancer happens and things got worse. Multiple rounds of chemo and surgeries later the guy was bound to a wheel chair. It didn’t look good at all. However, the week before he was supposed to race the friend called his partner to tell him that he was able to walk 200 feet with a cane and they both were extremely excited as if he’d just climbed mt. Everest. While the finish line was not going to be the end of a grueling SwimRun race, the finish line was 200 feet with a cane and that seemed like a huge accomplishment. I think everyone understood the point, that struggle and accomplishment is relative and supporting those that are struggling far worse than the SwimRun participants is more important.

Remember, that finishing an IronMan or Ultra Beast or Ultra Marathon is a great feat and should be recognized, but what should be more worthy of celebration is those who struggle to make it through their first work out and keep coming back out, or those who can only walk 200 feet with a cane. Go out today and support everyone. AYE!
