YHC is nearing the crest of the hill but is not quite over it, thus upon occasion of passing my 65th birthday last week wanted to return to lead the boys in another rendition of what Lightweight has creatively branded “America’s Greatest Start to the Week.” Indeed!

The Thang:

Warmup SSH x 20, IW x 10, Prisoner Squats x 10, Windmills x 10, Arm Circles front and back x 10.

Into Kenan we went for a Stadium Stair Ladder—one squat at the bottom, sprint up an aisle to the portal for 11 merkins. Repeat adding one squat and subtracting one merkin for 12 trips.

Then to the end zone we went for a modified version of “The Beast,” a hellish compendium of exercises built on a 6-6-6 format (six landmarks, six reps, six revolutions). Starting at the goal line, we lunge walked 10 yards and did six Carolina Dry Docks, to the 20 for six more, to the 30 for six more, back to the 20 for six more, to the 10 for six more and back to the goal line for six more.

We did two more revolutions of travel by bear crawl with six merkins at each landmark and then another with travel by lunge walks and six squats. Limited time prevented a full routine of six revolutions.

Given it’s Kenan Stadium and June, it was only appropriate to add on a tried-and-true football team conditioning drill called “the 300”—sprint the length of the field, walk the width, sprint the length coming back and walk the width coming back, for a total of about 300 yards. Repeat a second time.

And tie it in a nice bow with round-robin “Mary”—including but perhaps forgetting something Freddie Mercuries, LBC, Heels to Heavens, Boats-and-Canoes, Russian Twists and Supermans.

A good time was certainly had by all. Until next time …
