A common phrase for many in F3 is Iron Sharpens Iron. This concept can certainly apply to the rivalry between Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. When we think of these two elite social, educational and service institutions, it seems as if they have always been the juggernauts they currently are.
UNC was first alluded to the in 1776 State Constitution and was the only public institution of higher education to graduate a student in the 18th Century with Hinton James, who legend has it walked from Wilmington to enroll, as the first student. UNC had many struggles, allowed to stay open during the Civil War, but lost a higher percentage of citizens than any other town in the south. UNC closed briefly during construction, the spirit of service and the motto Lux & Libertas continues to be manifested today in the wealth of educational, research and service efforts that exist today.
Duke “started” in humble Brown’s School House in Randolph County (near Trinity, NC) in 1838 and transitioned to Union Institute, Normal College, then Trinity College and briefly closed after the Civil War then relocated to Durham in 1892, thanks to the generosity of the Duke Family who offered several $100,000 gifts contingent on “admitting women on equal footing with men.” In 1924 The Duke Family established a trust dedicated to aiding three colleges, the Methodist Church, hospitals, orphanages and other contributions to society.
Both institutions have significant faults and owe a significant part of their creation to the work of slaves, but YHC argues that the reason the two are so great is due to a competition and rivalry…and with that, we started our workout of rivalry.

YHC placed 11 aluminum cups, to signify the 11 combined ncaa men’s basketball championship trophies earned by UNC and Duke, in the middle (about 30 yards) between teh two groups. We were going to play 3 games (to signify two regular season competitions and a meeting in the ACC Tournament) of a competition where the PAX were told to complete a set number of exercises, then use the prescribed movement to travel to the trophies and push a trophy to the opponents side of the line. Whatever team had the most trophies at the end of each game, was the loser.

The Tar Heels narrowly won the first game and YHC shared that UNC leads the all time series in basketball 141-114 including sweeping the two games during the 2021 season.

The Duke Team won again, despite having one less PAX – which goes to show how the unexpected often happens! 28 Flutter Kicks (the number of NCAA Championships UNC has (45) more than Duke *17).
COT
YHC shared that despite their differences, UNC and Duke are two juggernauts in so many industries and they compete, collaborate and challenge each other – just like each of the PAX. It’s important to be yourself and to find one’s own way to grow and compete and serve society.
Yunus shared the glorious news that his son is home from the hospital and we continue to pray for a continued recovery. Yunus shared that things are all possible with visualization, smart planning, dedication and hard work.
King LL invited all PAX to join him for some prayer and bible study at Kings Park on Friday’s at 7:00 a.m.
Thank you for playing along, allowing the opportunity to lead and helping make YHC better.
