6 Spokes and a Figure 8

September 20, 2018

WHEN: 09/20/2018
QIC: Shake It
PAX: Lowtide, Soybean, Dial-Up, Weenie Roast, Baggins, Prosecco, Blue Indian, Cool J, Knope, Soda Popinski, Justice, Funny Money, Magellan, Pebbles, Sal Pal

4 PAX tackled an EC run beforehand.  All-in-all we had 16 PAX ready for YHC’s first Bullpen Q in almost a year.

YHC has been thinking a lot about grit lately.  Grit has been on my mind because I’ve been trying to figure out how to instill grit into my students.  I want my students to be willing to take on difficult problems, stumble along the way, and then continue to pursue a solution.  I want my runners to push through discomfort, to refuse to stop, and to run faster than they thought possible. Is grit something that can be taught, or is it something from within?  Grit is something that I believe F3 has in abundance. Day in and day out I get to witness PAX push themselves to the limit, and accomplish things they never thought possible. PAX completing GoRuck events, running 4 legs in the Blue Ridge Relay, dominating a Spartan course, and the list goes on.  Today, I was hoping to deliver a workout that would take some grit to get through.

Warm-Up:

  • SSH x25
  • WMH x10
  • LBAC x10 forward and reverse
  • True American Burpees x10

The Thang:

YHC was staring at google maps last night looking for inspiration from downtown Durham.  The six pointed wheel at Mangum, Chapel Hill, and Morgan St stood out. We did a Ricky Bobby on our way to the intersection.  PAX would bear crawl down each spoke of the wheel and do 10 true americans. After each spoke they would bear crawl back to the water fountain and perform 20 box jumps on the fountain.  Exercise finished when all PAX make it to all 6 spokes and back. The fountain was a little too tempting for Justice, and he took a little dip to cool himself down.

We then headed down Morgan St and took a right on Foster.  We pulled into the parking lot on our right which Knope pointed out was across from Rise.  The parking lot had two giant islands through the middle, so that the paved portion looked like a giant 8.  YHC decided for the PAX to run figure 8’s in the parking lot. Every time they ran a length of the parking lot they would complete tuck jumps with the tuck jump total increasing by 8 each time.  A figure 8 takes four trips across the parking lot. Next we completed a figure 8 with LBCs.

5 minutes on the clock and we moseyed back to ReCity
