Introduction

I grew up playing soccer and it has always been my favorite sport to play, but it wasn’t until adulthood that I became a soccer fan or knew anything about the sports greatest stars, because I grew up in America. Soccer wasn’t televised growing up, and it wasn’t until my 20’s that Spanish TV became a thing, allowing me to watch some Mexican league soccer now and then. The World Cup in America in 1994 made things easier, and Fox Sports in 2000’s really opened up the world of soccer for me. I love watching the World Cup and seeing the sport’s greatest stars on it’s greatest stage. Today’s workout will involve a good solid beatdown for the Pax, followed by a fun game of mini soccer at the end to entice the kids to stick it out. A swim meet has stolen many of our regular Pax so we had an intimate group for today’s festivities.

Warm Up

SSH IC x 10, Forward arm circles IC x 10, reverse x 10, squats SC x 10, merkin SC x 10

The Thang

Dora 1-2-3

Dads and kids pair-up and do the following exercises: 50 wall derkins, 75 Ping-Pong table pull-ups, 100 Freddy Mercurys.

Race

Dad bear crawl about 30 yards and return, racing the kids who ran about 100 yards up and back.

Soccer game

Dads play crab walk-style, kids get to play normally but need to have all 5 players touch the ball before shooting. Dads can just shoot! Prior to the game the kids were given some basic instruction in flopping, and really milking it. They’ll need some practice if they ever want to earn a PK!

Ball of Kid/Circle of Trust

Sports help us practice strategy and build physical strength, and are only enjoyable if you and your opponent play within the rules, so play with honor and integrity whether you win or lose. Teamwork is crucial to be successful in sports, and also in the workplace. The kids got some practice with this today (my 2.0’s did nothing but bicker about passing – we’re working on this!) And make sure you lose sometimes: that means you are accepting difficult challenges, and losing with grace takes a lot of practice! Until we meet again in the sunshine, Aye!
