Time to Step Up

October 12, 2017

WHEN: 10/12/2017
QIC: Slow Pitch (VQ)
PAX: Brick, Pusher, and Wanderlodge (FNG)

Preface:

There were a lot of firsts today for YHC. Today was YHC’s VQ, an event that seemed daunting for so long that has finally come to pass. This is YHC’s first backblast or any kind of published post outside of social media. There are all sorts of thoughts flooding my mind when writing this (don’t screw this up – write the BB sometime t-t-t-today Junior! – how reflective can I be, should I be – who cares?). Seriously, still a ton more. Today, I got to name an FNG for the first time, which his first name didn’t stick after I learned it already existed and thus had to audible. But that’s the beauty of a VQ, right? So much to learn. Lessons that I may have never learned if I didn’t see today as an opportunity to step up, grow, push myself, and contribute to this beautiful F3 Nation.

Now, let’s go down to the field for a quick recap.

Warm Up

  • Lap around the Peanut Loop
  • Good Mornings
  • Windmills
  • LBAC
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Seal Claps
  • Merkins
  • Calf Stretches (really more for me)
  • Glute Stretches (also, really more for me)
    • Side Bar: I’m always down for more stretching if any other Qs are reading – helps me from getting too tight after the workout

The Thang

YHC consulted some sure fire first ballot HOF Qs, Sweats and Assisi, for tips on how to plan out a Q. It should have been recorded and sent in to the F3 Podcast…a wealth of knowledge between these two and I am sure many more! Thanks to all who helped shape this Q. (That means you too, Floyd…oh and 2-Ply for originally EHing me…and other sources of encouragement and inspiration found in the likes of Cardiac, Juco, Aus Ju, and many others…again, the list of influence is long!). This Q became a string of pearls.

Pearl 1: Dora – at the pain ground, PAX got into teams of two. The first High Impact Man (HIM) started at the pull up station to do “10 second pull ups” (straight dead hang for 10 seconds and then UP and back down for 10 seconds and then UP) while the other HIM ran to the second light pole and back. PAX switched until the total number of reps was 20 pull ups.

Pearl 2: PAX mosey’d to the building for a solid BTTW action. After a silent few seconds, each PAX called out a 15 count to 1) test our toughness and 2) establish an attainable goal. Great job, men, for pushing on that one. After a moment of recovery, there was a half wall staring us right in the face. Well, more like right in our knees, but nonetheless, it was crying out for some love. So the PAX completed

  • Box Jumps, OYO to 20
  • Dips, IC to 20
  • Step Ups, OYO, 10 each leg
  • Erkins, IC to 10

Rinse and repeat.

Side Bar: it was during this time I felt an overwhelming rush of pride when our FNG said he felt like throwing up (which we introduced him to our lexicon and the phrase, “spilling merlot,”). I told him I’d be honored. lol

Pearl 3: PAX mosey’d to grab a medium sized rock. We gathered at one light pole where YHC began to wax eloquently about a unique “on this day” themed exercise. It was on this day, in 1989, that the Dallas Cowboys traded Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for a total of 12 players! Some reports read as high as 18 with draft picks and all, but Got Dang, 12 players?! As a strong UGA Dawgs fan, this was a special tidbit that I took and ran with (sort of like how Georgia is runnin all ova dem boys out there – GO DAWGS!) I digress. No, actually I don’t. GO DAWGS!

Back to the action

In honor of  a DGD (ask MARTA or Peach what that means) PAX did a sets of 12s – overhead press the rocks, leave rocks and run one light pole, and then squat jump. Small explanation needed for a tough pearl.

Mary: barely enough time for IC to 30 Flutter Kicks.

Name-O-Rama allowed us to meet our FNG, a Kentucky fan I named Laettner, whose name I later changed to Wanderlodge since F3 Churham already has a Laettner. Welcome, Wanderlodge. You killed it man. Great job!

COT: Cardiac, his M, and their new 2.0. Rest up, brother.

Moleskin:

Seriously, this was a humbling experience (PAX who willingly and eagerly listen to my commands, what?). I have a new found respect for what goes into a Q (planning and execution). I felt as if I did reach a new level in my own walk and I am thankful for it. Already looking forward to my next one.

AYE!
