Background
Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy”s favorite workout was as follows:
1 mile Run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile Run
And the above is done, timed, while wearing a weighted vest. He fittingly nicknamed the workout “Body Armor,” but after he was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005, the workout became known as The Murph. And to further honor him an annual, nationwide tradition began of gathering to do The Murph on Memorial Day. Family schedules prevented The Thicket”s PAX from holding the event on Memorial Day this year, so the closest possible day was chosen, and the purpose and effort was unaffected.
The Thang
Six PAX convened at The Thicket AO and got right to work up the hill into Great Meadow for mile No. 1. Then came the chosen partition this year, which was 10 sets of:
1-2-3-4 Pull-ups
2-4-6-8 Push-ups
3-6-9-12 Squats
Closing out the workout was mile No. 2, repeating the path up the hill and back.
Not a lot of time (or breath) for mumblechatter, but the PAX pushed each other hard. The goal was to break the 60-minute mark. Mission accomplished. Next year we”ll move the goal to 50 minutes.
Start Time: 5:32
End Time: 6:28
COT
Special morning to share with the PAX. The Murph is indeed more than just a workout. It is a tradition that helps push us and humble us, while honoring a man who gave everything he had. Hope more will join us next year — at a new location in our neck of the woods, to be determined.
