Over the last month of Rabbit birth from pre-AO to an official AO, it’s been fantastic to see so many introduced to trail running. For YHC, trail running in BC has been a past time for nearly a decade. I’m thrilled to finally have fellow trail travelers in the gloom.

With that, let’s get going. There would be possums, rocks, roots, branches, and merkins.

Warmup:
Willie Mayes Hayes x 20
Imperial Walkers x 20
Plank with a calf stretch
Upward dog stretch

The Thang:
Take road down to dog park trail
From the dog park trail cross the swamp on the long AF bridge
Swamp up to the top of the Catullo hill
From Catullo parking area cross over BC Parkway to Bennett Mountain trails
Navigate the power line single track along Bennett Mountain and then back towards the AO
Stop to regroup. While we wait, the pax does:
Merkins x 50
Air squats x 20
Finish back across the bridge and up to the hill to the start

Cool down / Mary:

Bridge pose
Plank with calf stretch
Upward dog

A source of inspiration for YHC in running and in life, in general, has been following some of the stories of ultrarunners like Kilian Jornet. The level of perseverance and mental toughness that it takes to get through a 100-mile mountain trail race is next-level stuff. Recently, Kilian Jornet – without argument the best ultramarathon runner in the world – set a fastest known time for climbing Everest. He not only did it once but twice in a week. There’s a bunch of great videos on YouTube about Kilian, here’s one.

Perseverance is a critical life skill. Trail running and ultrarunning, in particular, is a great way to practice that skill. Especially running for long hours at night over a long course like an ultra. Keep running and always set greater goals for yourself. Don’t let challenges you face day to day stand in the way of your goals. Keep running.
