Hit Bull, Win Steak

September 14, 2017

WHEN: 09/14/2017
QIC: Tater Tot
PAX: Beano (EC), Caviar, Cherie Berry (R), Chubbs (EC), Crockett, Cyanide, Dundee, Elf, The Exchange (EC), Funny Money, Justice, Low Tide, Mr. Brady, Pebbles, Riggs, Sal Pal, Soda Popinski, Tater Tot (EC)

21 is a good number today. 21 PAX. 21 straight wins for the Indians (Including 3 from YHC’s beloved Orioles).

EC Ruck to Durham School of the Arts, over to West Village, and back. We stopped to help a Duke hospital nurse on her way to work. She left her phone inside and needed to call to get back in. Beano obliged. We were good citizens. She thanked us and said she was glad to run into some guys “backpacking.” Yep. That’s what we had on. Backpacks.

Warm Up

YHC, The Exchange and Chubbs had to hustle back to ReCity to get things going. Beano, as if he planned it, parked at a restaurant on our loop and met up with us early on in the ruck, then got to his car quick, and got to the site quick after our good deed. Chubbs needed a knife for … reasons (I forget, I think he said something about stabbing Soda Popinski, but who even knows), and YHC let him borrow mine. So that’s two good deeds so far this morning from the EC guys alone. Strong work!

SSH x 21 (for the WINdians)
Willie Mayes Hays (of Major League fame) x 15
Good Mornings x 15
Imperial Walkers X 15 with 5+ Imperial Squat Walkers added on at the end. YHC did an absolutely perfect job explaining this to the PAX, everyone got it, no one mumble-chattered. Don’t bother asking the PAX about it, it was fine. IT WAS FINE.

The Thang

Happy to have 21 PAX at Bullpen this morning! We had Caviar downrange from Greenville in town. He forgot to pack shorts for his trip so he showed up in jeans and a t-shirt. JEANS. tClaps to him for doing the full workout (including about 2 miles of running) in denim.

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t kept up with Triple A Baseball playoffs, you would have known that our dear Durham Bulls lost their first playoff game last night to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders (the Yankees AAA affiliate that is some kind of hedgehog train conductor). Some PAX were at the game. Crockett is a noted Yankees fan too, so at least he was happy. With the #WINdians phenomenon and local playoff baseball, there was some good mumble chatter.

YHC announced we’d be running to the Bulls Stadium, doing something stupid, and running back. We’ll stop on the way to regroup. And that’s what we did.

Run down Broadway, take a left towards the YMCA. Stop at the Duke Health/YMCA parking lot and knock out a quick 10 burpees OYO. Run up the street past the Marriott and stop for 20 Prisoner Squats by the Bull Statue. Get back to the run down to American Tobacco, but head towards Tobacco Road Sports Cafe. GREAT NEWS! The gate to get around into the DBAP is open and we circle up beneath the Hit Bull, Win Steak sign in left field.

It was here that YHC announced 100 Burpees in 10 Minutes. This confused Bobby Riggs. Understandably, had to re-explain, but then also YHC realized that the PAX was probably trying to buy time. It’s okay, this exercise is easy at first and then get’s real tough. The object is to do 10 burpees within 1 minute for 10 minutes, you rest after 10 burpees and you start again on the next minute counter. The first couple sets are easy cause you’re a macho man and quite the specimen. The mumble chatter our first 3 or 4 rounds was pretty good. Most PAX were finishing with 20-30 seconds on round 1 and 2, then 15-25 seconds on round 3-5, then things got quiet after 5 minutes of burpees. The last few sets, when you’ve done 50 burpees, is when it really gets challenging. The PAX worked hard, you could tell that on the last two sets – guys were really pushing themselves. I love this exercise because it is terrible. By the time you get to 8, 9, 10, you have no breaks and you may be just doing burpees for 3-4 minutes straight.

After two much-needed ten counts, we got to moseying back. This time with stops that would just regather the group and low-squat hold. After 3 group stops, we rounded the corner on Broadway and made it back to ReCity. Time for Mary.

  • Thanks for coming out! Keep it up!
  • October 14 – American Tobacco Ruck – it is going to be physically challenging and worth it. And it is going to be a really great 2nd F event as well. Strong recommendation from today’s Q. YHC has plenty of bricks at the homestead if any PAX would like 6, you can get some duct tape and watch some tutorials on how to pack up a ruck with bricks.
  • Thanks to all the PAX that have come out to our new site. YHC is going to formally overview things with the 1st F Q’s and expect an announcement in the next week or so!
  • Prayers for PAX running Spartans this weekend and for those impacted by the recent hurricanes.

Thoughts during 100 Burpees in 10 Minutes – Why don’t we call Riggs, Bobby Riggs? That’s his full name right?
And around the 6th minute YHC noticed that The cartoon giant bull on the sign has testicles… someone had to draw bull testicles and get it approved and then it was blow up and is now on display for all to see.
