Gray Water Blues

October 15, 2019

WHEN: 10/15/2019
QIC: Mothman
PAX: RG3, Cricket, Iron Lung, Jingles, Grunge and Mothman

It was a chilly morning in Briar Chapel. My watch said 47 deg C when I walked up to the AO at about 5:20AM. I was excited because this was my first time serving as Q for #therabbit in over a year. There was some differing mumble chatter on Slack about the benefits of hitting the trails or the roads on this morning. The rabbit started as a trail running AO but had morphed into a street run in recent months – which is good because that’s what the people wanted. Today, however, RG3 suggested a run up to the Veranda and back by way of Bennett Mountain. I loved the idea. Plus, it was also fantastic to have Grunge with us this AM as he prepares for his 100 mile fun run this weekend – run safe Grunge.

Warm-Up: 30 SSH’s, 10 WMH, OYO Calf Stretch, OYO Dealers Choice

The Main Event: From 1600 Briar Chapel Parkway we ran North on Great Ridge Rd. We jumped off Great Ridge and headed East onto the Pokeberry Creek walking trails. This brought us towards Bennett Mountain. At the top of Bennett Mountain we regrouped and proceeded to dominate that damn mountain and her uneven trails. Along the way we saw several pressure relief valves venting recycled “Gray Water” into the woods and brush several yards from the trail. I thought nothing of it. Soon enough we were leaving the woods and gathered near Break Away Cafe. We paused for a moment to regroup and catch our collective breath. From that point on, the story takes a turn for the worse.

On our way back down the mountain either your Q took a wrong turn, or the sprinklers changed their direction of spray. We were caught in a cross-fire hurricane of gray water for what seemed like several minutes (in retrospect I’m sure it was only 5 seconds). Several PAX (who will remain nameless) reported that they may have mistakenly left their mouths open while traveling through the shower of non-potable water.

Cricket and I both quickly agreed that if either of us were to be overtaken by an unrelenting flesh-eating bacteria – the other would attempt to be a positive male role model and possible father figure for our newly orphaned children’s lives – thank you Cricket.

Needless to say, we survived the surprise shower and completed our 4 mile trek. Our thirst for additional miles was quenched…
