Dr. Royal Burpee developed a set of movements in 1939 to measure the average person’s fitness level. At that point in time, fitness tests were apparently gear towards people who were already physically fit. His set of movement which became known as the burpee was supposed to test an average person’s level of fitness. He was adamant that one should not do more than 4 reps. We overshot that by just a bit.
