Cold weather, Schmold weather

Introduction

YHC has been on the IR off and on a lot lately. Probably a combination of 1) 48 yo 2) gung ho exerciser 3) poor stretcher.  Anyway, Sunnyside is a nice way to get back into the fold, and my M is looking forward to YHC’s beat down today. Under normal circumstances Mrs. Pete (“Psych”) would never dream of exercising outdoors in brisk weather, but she is happy to be included in these workouts. On a personal note, I think the recent addition of M’s to Sunnyside has been a welcome change and invigorated these bimonthly workouts.

Warmup

The usual assortment of SSH, forward arm circles, reverse arm circles, and slow deep squats. All done in cadence. Followed by a brief warm-up lap.

The Thang

Families team up for various exercises.

#1 “patty cake” merkins: Parent and 2.0’s plank facing each other. They give “high-fives” after each merkin (in theory, 2.0’s can just plank). We did 20 single count OYO.

#2  bar hang/upper body combo: Parents and 2.0’s will trade bar hangs while the other person does an exercise on the wall next to the playground. Parents do 30 SC Derkins (or 30 dips) OYO. Kids do 30 dips (or whatever they can do). If the person holding on lets go before exercise completion I was going to award 5 team penalty-Burpees, but the bar was icy so this plan was scrapped on the fly.

#3 long mosey to “ropes” playground. 5 penalty Burpees for not crossing the street safely! Family members must complete one circuit without touching the ground. One member of each team can assist using only 3 limbs (2 arms hopping, or 1 arm while standing). 5 team penalty-Burpees if a family member touches a foot down. Return to AO by mosey.

Mary

No time for Mary – we had to get to naming FNG’s and FNK’s. Schneebly led a few seated straddle stretches after pestering YHC repeatedly.

COT

Proud of the PAX for posting in 24 degree weather! I expect these shenanigans from the F3 dudes, but cool to see the M’s and 2.0’s step up. As we remind each other at F3 repeatedly, don’t get too cozy. Pick the harder option, get stronger, complain less – we’re all very fortunate and far-removed from the discomforts of food insecurity and inadequate shelter, so remind yourself of your good fortune by pushing your limits periodically. Pick a new challenge, and meet it. Aye!
