Car! Car!

WHEN: 01/15/2019
QIC: Nighshift
PAX: 2 Ply, Baggins, Banana Split, Bells, Cake, Crab Cake, Crimson, Dial Up, Funny Money, Justice, Kia, Knope, Low Tide, Soda Popinski, Sweatervest, Smeagol, Magellan, Sal Pal

I targeted The Big Dance for stop 8 on my Global Post Challenge. Sweats was tee’d up to Q, but asked for a last minute sub. Apparently, the pax didn’t know they were stuck with me, cause we had a solid 19. I reviewed the BBs and realized this AO plays hard, so I showed up early to scout the AO and focused on the attempt to fill Sweats shoes. Unfortunately, I failed to focus much on a much more important matter.

We hit a nearby hill for Burp-back Mountain. It was a culdesac and I didn’t give much thought to street traffic until a Tesla came silently flying around the corner. Just imagine if there was only a handful of pax in place of the 19 present. While there is safety in numbers, there’s even more safety in actual safety precautions! Below are good suggestions courtesy of Knope. Let’s make a concerted effort to make safety a priority at all our AOs.

  • Safety is important for all PAX, but even more so for the Q, the site Q (if he’s there) and the 1st F Q if they are there. It takes a village.
  • If the exercise is near an intersection, then it should be in the intersection, with designated traffic monitors.
  • Ideally Road work should have cones upstream from traffic if they’re available.
  • For Hill Road work, the start or stop should always be at the top or bottom, not the middle.
  • If we are going to be on roads we need to be in the intersections so cars coming up can see us from a distance. Even designate two guys as traffic patrol (in today’s case two pairs).
  • We also should be cognizant of compound intersections that involve a couple intersections in close proximity, people tend to power through those.
  • Hi-Vis/reflective clothes are important
  • For Road work, use headlamps if available.
