Be Kind – Rewind

July 25, 2018

WHEN: 07/25/2018
QIC: Chum and Flenderson
PAX: Dueling Banjos, Chum, Flenderson, GTL, Duplo, Quimby, Bright Idea, Griswold, Zook, Sussudio, and Germ

YHCs had the fortunate opportunity to serve as the Mystery Qs at The Big House, and we were arguably even more fortunate that our assigned theme was 80s movies.  It was a bit of a daunting challenge, given the nearly infinite amount of stellar, life-impacting movies from that glorious decade. Of course, there is the immortal John Hughes pantheon (Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, etc.), but YHCs felt obliged to dig a little deeper.  Chum said he literally spent almost two hours while at work trying to determine which movies he would use as inspiration for his portion of the workout. What the resulting workout may have lacked in physical challenge was hopefully more than compensated by the reminiscent buffoonery.

As the clock approached 0545 (and as the local FiA group massed across the parking lot for their Wednesday run), a little dude sporting a fedora, his shades, and a classic intro song blaring from a speaker, came running along and proclaimed he was “getting the band back together”!  The men (albeit somewhat puzzled) followed this diminutive pied piper and his bluesy tunes into the grassy area of the traffic circle, where the warm-up commenced.

Warm-Up

  • Basically bad dancing to the Blues Brothers Intro riff (High Knees, Side Kicks, some spins, some shucking and jiving, and then some air punches as the riff closed)
  • Overhead/Seal Clap Combo
  • Imperial Walkers
  • WMH
  • Pax Choice

After the bad dancing, Chum explained (though somewhat out of breath from the dancing, as well as the concern that the FiA ladies just witnessed this shit) that today’s theme was 80s Movies, and what better movie to begin with than The Blues Brothers.  Made in 1980, it was the first skit from SNL to be made into a movie and featured cameos from many stars of the time.

“It’s 106 miles to Chicago.  We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes; it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses.”

“Hit it.”

The Thang #1

Chum transitioned to the next movie by playing its title song – “Spies Like Us” by Sir Paul.  Spies Like Us, at least in Chum’s opinion, is an underrated, overlooked movie but still makes him laugh out loud.  Interestingly, it was directed by the same man who directed The Blues Brothers (John Landis), and it also starred Dan Aykroyd (who starred as Elwood Blues in The Blues Brothers for those uneducated who are actually reading this).

The movie revolves around two underachievers, Austin Millbarge (Aykroyd) and Emmit Fitz-Hume (Chevy Chase), who undergo a crash course in spy training to unwittingly battle Soviet forces (remember the good old Cold War?).  So, we attempted to recreate the crash course.

Partner up for a mini-Dora.  One man performs exercise, and other man performs G-Force training (“Wanna get a cup of coffee?”) by taking a lap around the traffic circle, until cumulative count is achieved.

  • 150 Chuck Norris Merkins (what better way to combat ninjas than to involve Chuck Norris?)
  • 100 Mountain Climbers (to be ready to scale the Pamir Mountains in Russia to disarm a nuclear ICBM)
  • 50 Burpees (because burpees can pretty much fix anything)

As we wrapped up our crash course in spy training, Chum offered another somewhat interesting tidbit: Not only were both of these movies directed by the same man and also shared a leading actor, but they also both featured a cameo by another star.  This star portrayed the police storeroom clerk in Blue Brothers and the testing administrator in Spies Like Us. He’s most prominently known for his work as a puppeteer and voice actor. A few answers were volleyed; Zook offered up Eddie Murray (I assumed he meant Eddie Murphy and not the former Baltimore Orioles slugger).  However, no one answered correctly, so 10 penalty burpees were issued.  Correct answer was Frank Oz. He’s the man behind Muppets legends Fozzie the Bear and Miss Piggy, not to mention mutha f#$%ing Yoda in the early Star Wars trilogy.

Chum then used music for another transition – “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins.  That’s right. Top Gun, suckas! Chum tagged off with Flenderson, and the shenanigans continued.

The Thang #2

Top Gun Theme

  • Inverted Military Press (one partner hold legs).  Switch and repeat. Gotta be looking good for some beach volleyball.
  • Buddy Carry Dog Fight.  Buddy Carry while weaving through & around those weird brown toilet bowl-looking “bogeys” on the lawn.  Switch and repeat. “I got tone! Firing!”

Flenderson then led us into the final movie – Karate Kid

  • Punches 20 count (insert loud “Kee-Yah!”)
  • Bridge of Hate: Pax lie on their six, shoulder to shoulder, and pass the man from end of the line to the other end.  Needless to say, this was awkward but Zook had “the time of his life.” So, Flenderson audibled –
  • Tunnel of Love x2 iterations
  • One-legged Burpee x5 each leg
  • Daniel-Son – x10.  Karate Kid crane kick position. Alternate legs in quick succession. “If do right, none can defend.”  (But if do in public, all with laugh at you)

A discussion was had as to if Daniel lands on the bad leg. A burpee bet was made and Chum pulled up the clip to determine he did, in fact, “toe tap” with the bad leg.  Thus, the first official video review in F3 history was performed, but no legs were swept.

Mary:

  • Flutter Kicks x20
  • Wax On Wax Off (Box Cutter) x20
  • Ring of Fire Merkins 5 Rounds (5, 4, 3, 2, and 1)
  • 25 SSH (Duplo)
  • WWII (Quimby)
  • LBCs (Sussudio)

BOM/COT:

Chum reminded us to be a good partner & wingman, just like the guys from these classic 80s movies.  Flenderon’s Grandfather use to use “be kind rewind” as an analogy for integrity. Because there was no one checking to see if you actually rewound the VHS until the next person rented that movie.  Be kind to all, especially when no one is watching.
