The third week of Chatham's Tuesdays on ICE started with sub freezing temps but a big crowd for the Third Annual Winter Solstice Saunter. We once again celebrated the shortest day of the year with a race around the traditional Rabbit 8k(ish) loop of BC.
Warmup: SSH x 20 IC, Willie Mays Hays x 10 IC, Stretch OYO 30 secs.
Main Event : PAX gathered at the marked stating line, synchronized watches and took off. Jinx took an early lead which he would refuse to relinquish for the duration of the event. About 400 meters into the race YHC decided that trying to stay within viewing distance of the front of the pack was a terrible plan and settled into a nice plodding pace. Anything that happened in front of me is a complete mystery other than Jinx ran away with the race clocking in with a 29:43 finish. Nescafe edged out Summer Solstice Champ Vandelay by 17 secs to pick up the silver medal (there were no actual medals but you can imagine, I'm sure there will be some next year).
We discovered later that despite our best efforts there was a navigational mishap on the course which led to Cousin Vinney missing one of the last turns and running an additional half mile. This seems to be becoming a tradition as well and I look forward to seeing how we can get Cousin Vinney lost in BC again next year.
One final note, Jinx concocted a secret scheme to award a prize to the participant who ran the closest to an undisclosed pace. Upon completion of the course the winner was determined to be Homes who ran the closest to 8:57/mi which turns out to be the pace Cricket ran in the inaugural Solstice Saunter, therefore Homes picked up the brand new Cricket Cup, possibly a new yearly tradition? Possibly something weird Jinx had for reasons…..
Jinx may have won the race but I like to think everyone of us who don't have to drink from the mug, we're the real winners.
Jinx came up with this Spreadsheet for the Strava Segments hit during the route for anyone that is interested (the fast people)
