While putting this workout together I couldn”t help but be reminded of the Greek Mythological character known as Sisyphus. Sisyphus was the king of Ephyra and was know to be self aggrandizing and deceitful. So, as punishment, Sisyphus was exiled to the Abyss known as Tartarus. His task was to roll a boulder up a mountain only to have it roll back down once he reached the top, for an eternity. The gods found this futile labor to be a hideous punishment worthy of his transgressions. Why did it remind me of this? I”ll explain.
After a warmup lap, SSH, good mornings, imperial walkers, WMHs, and slow merkins, the Pax”s “mundane” task began.
1st trip up-Grab steel, hold over head, sprint (or as fast as one can move with metal above head) to 1st island-25 shoulder presses. Steel at waist, sprint to 2nd island, 25 bent rows. Steel on shoulders, sprint to 3rd island, 30 squats. Plank till all done, then back down the hill.
2nd trip- steel overhead, sprint to 1st island, 25 tricep ext. Steel at waist, sprint to 2nd island, 25 curls. Steel on shoulders, sprint to 3rd, 30 jump lunges. Back down the hill.
3rd trip-steel in left hand, sprint to first, 20 merkins w left hand on steel. Steel in right hand, sprint to 2nd, 20 merkins with right hand on steel. Steel on shoulders, sprint to 3rd, 20 dry docks with hands on steel. And yet again, back down with the steel.
Round 2. Rinse and repeat all tasks with steel overhead, at waist, etc. with one change. Travel method changed to the lunge walk. After all 3 rounds were finished we returned to the bottom only to have to “roll up” to the next parking lot. The task here was as follow-
Steel held in front, karaoke from the left to right of parking lot, sprint up 2 spaces, steel on shoulders, karaoke right to left of lot, up 2 spots and repeat all a second time.
Finally steel was returned, and Mary time. Ring of fire of hi low planks, followed by flutter kicks, LBCs, and Russian hammers.
By the end I think I knew how Sisyphus felt, as I had spent 45 minutes doing mundane tasks that felt like an eternity. But after looking up and seeing all the fellow PAX suffering with me I realized this wasn”t Tartarus at all and I wasn”t Sisyphus. Rather I might have found Elysium, where the gods sent warriors who were granted immortality for their righteous lifes. Lord know I was surrounded by a few.
Shout out to all the PAX there and to “Guitar Hero” FNG. Aye!
