QIC: Grunge
PAX: Mr. Woodcock, Podrick, Rambler, John Boy, Gomer, Frank Lloyd Bunyan, Dueling Banjos, Stickman, Nanu Nanu, Kosher, Duplo, Horny Toad, GTL, Bright Idea, The Closer, Chum, Stinky Pete, Mothman, Grunge

Grunge VQ. Long discourse re: mental, spiritual preparations. Something, something…about journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. Throw in a bit about adversity and overcoming hardship. Insert subtle, but witty humor. Sun-tzu quote here. Follow up with Teddy Roosevelt quote. Make mention about greasy, fatty meal had the night before. More subtle, witty humor. Yada-yada-yada…

<Dramatic pause>

Reference to a childhood experience or memory and somehow make it relevant. Mini Oscar type thank you bit…almost forget M, but save it by prefacing with “last, but definitely not least.” Steal a riff from Steven Wright. Balance with impactful quote by Thomas Pynchon. (Casually toss up a basketball and do a finger roll while staring off into horizon as if deep in thought). Nod. Close hard with a powerful insight that ties this whole thing together in a masterful display of eloquence and intelligence. Follow with humility to temper ego. Give thanks again. End with cliche Nirvana quote coz “Grunge” and “Seattle” and all. Oops, forgot to toss in trademark “right on, brother!”…so do it right about here. Grunts and fist bumps.

BOM’SKIN

I tend to joke around a lot and talk a lot of smack, but want to get real for a moment. First and foremost, I appreciate the opportunity to lead you all. It is an honor and a privilege, and truly humbling to come out in the gloom and see all of you get the work done time and again.

Recently, I have been doing some research into this company called Spanx, the ladies undergarment company specializing in slimming intimates. They are about to enter the market with a new men’s line. As an investor, my responsibilities often require me to delve deep into figures, get down to the bottom of things, and sometimes, I have to stick my nose into dark places in order to sniff out any funky business. Which brings me to Spanx, and their visionary CEO, Sarah Blakely, the inventor of the booty shaper. What impacted me most out of all her many guiding principles, is that she has this thing where she regularly goes out of her way to embarrass herself. She says it forces her to go outside of her comfort zone and keep herself in check and maintain a fresh perspective on life. I draw inspiration from the story of how she closed her first sale by flying out to Texas with a home made prototype on a cold call meeting with the sales manager of Neiman Marcus. She started in with her presentation, but soon realized she was flailing big time, so she took a huge risk and invited the manager to accompany her into the ladies room (which took a ton of goading!) where she proceeded to change into her prototype. One look at the product and the manager was sold. By putting herself out there and risking it all, she was able to close the deal and get herself on the path towards building what is now a hugely successful billion dollar empire.

One of the things I love most about F3 is that this is a safe place, a judgment free zone. We are completely free to be fools here, take risks, make mistakes, embarrass ourselves, laugh at ourselves, and the brotherhood will not judge us. In our weakness, we are made strong by those who understand our weaknesses and raise us up in their strengths. And we each do the same for our brothers. Get it done here, men. Be free to push yourself, take risks, stumble and falter, without risk of losing face. Put down the shields and be raw in your work here. Allow yourself to be sharpened here, then take it out into the world because there is a lot of hurt going on out there now. Be the leaders, visionaries, mentors, husbands, fathers, friends…be the heroes you have envisioned yourself to to be. Put it all out there, really stretch and take risks. You may go far beyond anything your wildest dreams could offer. Be well, men. Aye!

**Continued thoughts and prayers for the victims and loved ones of Sunday night’s atrocity in Las Vegas, as well as those impacted by the hurricanes.
