After a three-week hiatus due to snow, Romper Room finally got a break with weather and the 2022 Durham Winter Games took place amid sunny skies and cool-but-pleasant temperatures. Our two-event homage to the Winter Olympics, which started this week in China, began with the usual warm-ups and a mosey to the rock, uh, pit(?) to for some good-sized stones to use later.
The first event of the morning was a running slalom. As the rest of the PAX did squats or SSH, each family did a timed run through a series of gates, needing to loosen their hips and channel their inner Alberto Tomba to get a good time. In what proved to be the most shocking result of the morning, Splits (representing the USA) and anti-running advocate Cosmo won gold with YHC and Thunderstruck (representing Jamaica) taking silver and the team of Knope (representing Canada), Snowflake, Ledecky and Sandman (representing Japan) taking bronze.
After a Rock Break featuring curls, overhead presses, rows and triceps, the kids took part in a biathlon-inspired competition. How it worked was, all PAX did three burpees (or other stuff later) and then ran sideline-to-sideline, then one kid grabbed Thunderstuck's Nerf blaster and fired five shots at a target (in this case a sled I grabbed from the garage). Then we repeated the whole thing until each kids got a chance to shoot. In the end, Sandman earned the gold by going 5-for-5. Legoland took silver with a 4-for-5 showing and Ledecky grabbed the bronze by going 3-for-5.
We did another round of the rock exercises, took the rocks back and gathered for a quick Mary featuring LBCs, Heels to Heaven, flutter kicks and some good, high-intensity Floyd Planks (IC).
COT: We learned about ski culture in Lebanon and how you can do family gambling on the Winter Olympics. Then we all got Duck Donuts and enjoyed the sunshine.
