YHC posted for the first time on July 12 of this year – my 39th birthday, so an easy anniversary date to remember.
I didn’t take long to get hooked, and now my 10-year-old 2.0 is joining me, and M and 7-y-o 2.0 have joined FIA. We are in.
Probably like many of you, YHC got into it for the prospect of getting in better physical condition. As you all know by now, Our Thing is about a lot more than that.
You need look no farther than the unhesitating and lightning-fast response to those in need after Hurricane Florence, both strangers Down East and one of our own here at home. Gives me goosebumps still to think about it.
And that generous spirit suffuses everything, from the open-arm welcome all FNGs receive to the pick-up-the-six ethos.
The latter is particularly appreciated by someone who, uh, often is the six or close to it.
I wanted to respond to the call to fill the Q sheet, but how can one Q from the 6?
That led to the idea for my first Q, which relied more on F3’s esprit de corps than my own prowess or lack thereof.

Basic setup: Mode of transportation from endline to midfield, then AMRAP of an exercise while the rest of team makes their way down. First team with their last guy to cross finish line and bang out one rep wins. Winning team chose a Bonus Exercise and did 15 reps to the losing team’s 20. (Can’t recall one of the Bonus Exercises…)
  • Karaoke plus AMRAP burpees – Bonus Exercise: LBCs
  • Bunny hop plus AMRAP merkins – Bonus Exercise: Tuck Jumps
  • Crab walk plus AMRAP jump squats – Bonus Exercise: Star Jumps
  • Bear crawl plus AMRAP dry docks – Bonus Exercise: ?
  • Overhead rock run (to top of goal box and back) plus AMRAP WWIIs – Bonus Exercise: Jackass Merkins
  • Wheelbarrow (to top of goal box and back, switching at top of goal box) plus AMRAP tuck jumps – Bonus Exercise: Mountain Climbers
  • AYG Full-field Sprint plus plank hold
Teams switched up order each time to make sure no one wound up stuck doing a million reps every time. Despite having Cardiac as our ringer, the aptly named Team 1 won all but one race. But the brave men of Team 2 are the real winners on account of those 30 extra reps.

YHC much appreciated but was not surprised by the support and encouragement received before, during and after the VQ. Particular shout-outs to Knope, who volunteered to review my Q idea beforehand and gave me some invaluable pointers, and to OPEC who bailed me out of a few VQ mistakes, i.e. forgetting to ask for prayer requests.
COT: Kia reminded about the film crew that will be at Thin Blue Line on Saturday at 7 a.m. to film guys in action and do interviews about the Florence relief effort. Show up if you can in F3 gear. YHC offered a plug for FIA, our sister organization that would welcome more participants. My M and little 2.0 love it. No need to be intimidated. Everyone does workout at their own pace/ability, and they give out cool nicknames. It’s at 8 a.m. at Thin Blue Line on Saturdays, right after our guys finish up. Tell your lady people.
YHC took us out with a prayer of thanksgiving for this outstanding group of men, and a prayer that we never take the blessing of F3 for granted, whether we’ve been posting for 10 weeks or 10 years.
