YHC was excited about Soft Launching #romperroom this morning, but also slightly apprehensive. Would anyone come? Could he pull off a workout that would be at least moderately challenging for adults but keep kids engaged?
It was to YHC’s immense relief when he pulled up at 0805 to see not only the end of the #thinblueline crew departing, but multiple PAX with 2.0s in tow already present and accounted for, a full 10 minutes before launch time. Shouts to Swamp, The Bogg (FNG from TBL only just before!), Malware and Uzi pulling off the double-down (or triple-dip in some cases!).
Gave a couple minute warning, and circled up at midfield, bluetooth speaker in tow providing the soundtrack. And the PAX kept coming! In total, we had 12 regular F3 PAX (well, 13 if you count Potter, and you probably should), plus 3 M’s, and 18 2.0s for a grand total of 33 humans, plus one dog courtesy of Toolbox (is that an FND?? He remained unnamed). Doggo was a Very-Good-Boy throughout, and YHC only regrets not incorporating Dog-Chasing as part of the workout. Catskill’s adorable puppy was also present, but sat out the workout.
Warm-up
Introduce the concept of the Pyramid. Do a warm-up exercise, followed by a number of Burpees, followed by another Warm-up Exercise. Burpee numbers were a 1-2-3-2-1 pyramid. Warm-up exercises were: SSH, WMH, Arm circles/reverse, Imperial Walker, Hillbilly.
Thang
Mosey down to the Grass field for a 5-corner pyramid. Sets of Slow Merkins/Slow Squats/WWIIs at each corner, using a 2-5-10-5-2 pyramid. YHC counted Merkins and Squats, while WWIIs were OYO. Run between corners at a pace of your choosing. Most adult chose the Mosey, while many 2.0s chose AYG.
Mosey back to the turf soccer field; grab a quick 2 minute water break, then everyone on the Endline.
Travel to midfield and back thusly: Bear Crawl to 18 yard box, 2.0 Carry to Midfield. Bernie Sanders back to 18 yard box, Crawl Bear back to Endline. We did this twice for good measure.
Next, a 2.0 Carry all the way to the midfield circle to set-up the next exercise.
Circle of Animals: Adults begin a bear crawl around midfield circle. Kids have to run in same direction, lap and tag their adult. Once tagged, switch and kids bear crawl while adults run to lap their kid. Once both have bear crawled, repeat, but with Crab Walk.
Two minute Water Break again, then head back to the 18 yard box for Sharks and Minnows
Round 1 – kids are Sharks, adult are minnows. Sharks must bear crawl, minnows get to run. Any tagged adults join the sharks. A couple go-throughs of this converted all the adults to Sharks (I think Brotox won?)
Round 2 – adults are Sharks, kids are minnows. Sharks must crab walk, minnows get to run. It took a bit longer, but eventually we got just about all of the kids converted to Sharks. Head back to midfield circle for…
Mary
A series of 10-15 IC count ab exercises. YHC was helped in cadence counts by his 2.0s Bowser and Frozone. Exercises included: Flutter Kick, LBCs, Box Cutters, American Hammer.
We wrapped 2-3 minutes early as we had many FNKs to name. YHC erred in not pulling his phone out immediately to record all the names, but thinks he got most of them. Fairly sure Weed & Feed’s M participated in the workout, but was busy with a tiny 2.0 during name-o-rama and so we missed naming her. No Announcements or Prayer Requests today.
CoT – YHC took us out, asking prayers to help us all be better parents, kids, and siblings.
Moleskin
YHC was pleased and humbled at the excellent turnout for this first iteration of Romper Room. He is hopeful we can keep up this momentum. It is great both to introduce 2.0s to a lifetime of fitness and exercise, and to bring the whole family into the F3 community. Shouts to Knope, the Godfather of this project who EH’d YHC and Bellhop into being Site Qs, and to everyone who came out today to help get this thing started. Next Romper Room will be in two weeks, 8/17, with Bellhop as the Q. In the meantime, take the trip South and check out #sunnyside next Saturday 8/10.
SYITG, Aye!
