No Q for Old Men

May 25, 2020

WHEN: 05/26/2020
QIC: Soybean, Wakanda
PAX: 2Ply, Banana Split, Shake It, Sweatervest, Wolverine

Wakanda (age: 10) has been reading the “Way of the Warrior Kid” book series by Jocko Willink lately. It’s inspired him to design workouts, set new fitness goals for the summer, learn more about the Navy Seals and study military tactics (loves Battlestack on YouTube). So when Sweatervest asked if anyone would be up for Q’ing Memorial Day, YHC pitched the idea of developing a workout for the PAX of Devil’s Ridge and he immediately said, “Yes!” His operating theme: “Battle Tactics.”

WARM UP

Mosey to plaza across from parking deck to finish second half of Seal/Ranger tribute

THE THANG

Alternate Lunge Walk / High Knees (“because soldiers march alot” – Wakanda) from tree to tree on the way to the track…but track closed, so improvise and mosey down to near Wallace Wade stadium.

Split into 2 teams – Team 1 goes clockwise, Team 2 counter-clockwise for:

  • Dragon Walk halfway around
  • Run 2nd half
  • Bear Crawl halfway around
  • Run 2nd half

Winning side gets glory and bragging rights

Mosey back to sidewalk beside track for more alternating Lunge Walks and High Knees marching.

At hill leading back to parking lot, Wakanda says everyone needs to learn “Reverse Slope Defense Tactics.” Team 2 runs to bottom of hill to perform alternating Dry Docks x 10 and Air Dramas x 10. Team 1 Crawl Bears halfway, then runs rest to pick up Dry Dock / Air Dramas action. Team 2 runs halfway up hill and Crawl Bears back down.

MARY

Salute to our Armed Forces:

  • Army: War Hammers x 15 IC
  • Navy: Flutters (with arms/legs w/swimming motion) x 15 IC
  • Air Force: Superman Ring of Fire x 15 count holder Per Pax
  • Marines: 2 minutes of crunches w/goal of 100

PAX all agreed that Wakanda’s Q was particularly brutal for old men like us.

COT

Prayers for Wakanda’s friend Rider, whose great grandmother is passing

Also, quick reflection: YHC doesn’t have anyone close to him whose paid the ultimate price in serving our nation – no firsthand knowledge or relationship to feel the sting of that loss. But YHC has friends whose fathers served in Vietnam and know of fallen brothers firsthand. Whatever your connection, today is a day to remember the deceased, but it’s just as much a moment to reach out and support those who are part of that soldier’s legacy. If you know someone who’s carrying that torch, today might be a good day to connect briefly, offer condolences and say “thank you.” Aye!
