Dungeon Master for a Day

August 17, 2019

WHEN: 08/17/2019
QIC: TB
PAX: Uzi, Red October, Unce Leo, Catskill, Nightshift, Cheeseteak, Rocky, Stop Drop and Roll, Vespa, IT, Popfly, Emmet

YHC was feeling a bit battered from a Coco Animal House beatdown and not enough sleep, but still wanted to try and get the most out of this fine Saturday morning.

It began with an EC coupon ruck involving YHC, Uzi, and Red October. Rucks loaded heavy and a homemade 40 lb sandbag from 0500 to 0630, including a trip down and up Laurel Hill. Good livin’.

10 PAX began the ME, including Uncle Leo visiting from Charlotte, here in our neck of the woods to move his son in for his first year at UNC.

YHC planned two sections for the ME: a traditional first half, and an experimental second half.

For the first half, SSH to warm up then YHC asked Uzi to lead us in some stretches (much needed, see above note on Animal House). The PAX then set off to the Law School where we did some partner Australian rows on the railings: one partner grabs the railings for rows, the other partner grabs their feet. Each PAX got in two sets of ten. A swift 20 merkins was followed by a bear crawl down the length of the school to the stairs.

The PAX mosey’d to the bottom of the hill next to the baseball stadium for some hill pyramids. The basic format: get an exercise, x reps at the bottom, 2x reps in the middle of the hill, 4x reps at the top, back to 2x reps on the way down, and x reps at the bottom again.

First round: 8, 16, 32, 16, 8 squats.

Second round: 4, 8, 16, 8, 4 merkins.

Third round: 2, 4, 8, 4, 2 burpees.

The Q was a bit smoked at this point, so the PAX mosey’d back to Hooker Fields for the second half and happened to find IT, Popfly, and Emmet waiting for us.

So, here’s the thing: YHC often feels disappointed if YHC can’t come up with some interesting gimmick every so often for a Q, and so stayed up much too late last night thinking something up. Inspiration came from YHC’s brief period of playing D&D back in grad school. YHC grabbed a D20, a D10, and a D4 and put together a list of 20 exercises. Roll the dice and the D20 result tells you the exercise, the D4 result is the tens of reps, the D10 is the ones of reps.

Example: one PAX rolls an 11 on the D20, a 3 on the D4, and a 7 on the D10. This translates to 37 American Hammers. Get it? No? Well… fine… I guess you’ll just have to come to my next few Qs as I perfect the system.

Anyway, the exercises were:

1. Merkins

2. Carolina Dry Docks

3. Squats

4. Lunges

5. Side Shuffle Hops

6. Mountain Climbers

7. WWIIs

8. Hello Dolly’s

9. Jump Squats

10. Jump Lunges

11. American Hammers

12. Peter Parkers

13. Overhead Claps

14. Plank Jacks

15. Wide Grip Merkins

16. Donkey Kicks

17. LBCs

18. Flutter Kicks

19. Monkey Humpers

20. Burpees

So the PAX went at it, taking turns rolling for about 25 minutes. Some exercises were done several times (American Hammers, overhead claps, burpees) and many not at all (Monkey Humpers, for example). YHC had to call an audible on one of the sets of burpees due to over smokage. System still needs some bugs worked out, but still a good beatdown all around.

COT: Unfortunately, YHC can’t recall what (if any) announcements and prayer requests were made because YHC waited too long to put together this back blast :-(. In YHC’s defense, the PAX needed to hurry COT along as our cars were being examined closely by a campus parking cop. But, we thanked God for our good health and good fortune and reminded ourselves that to truly lead is to serve.
