The Thang:
This was YHC’s VQ @thethicket and as a former Airman in the UK’s RAF and current Brit I wanted to introduce myself properly by taking the Pax through a typical day for ‘those wonderful men in their flying machines’.
All good days in the RAF start the night before with ‘socializing’ this was simulated by listening to the all time classic ‘Tubthumping’ by Chumbwumba.
SSH for duration plus 1 x Burpee for each “I get knocked down, but I get up again” and 1 x pistol for each time a drink is mentioned. YHC thinks this lead to about 30 burpees, but I was too busy breathing out of my arse to really count.
It’s a rule of RAF life that the night you over-socialize you’re guaranteed to have a forgotten fitness test the next morning.
The standard test used is the VO2 Max or Beep Test; a series of shuttles increasing in pace until failure. Run 20m, wait for a beep, run back. F3’d it up by doing 1 burpee at each beep; dreadful.
Next, we made like aircraft and flew down to the football field. Here YHC introduced the Pax to the concept of SERE. That is, what to do when you find yourself on the ground a long way from home.
Survive: You’ve just crashed and need to drag wingman away; Buddy Body Drag the width of field and back.
Evade: Much like bear evasion, you don’t need to be quicker than the enemy, just quicker than your friends; Sprint to far side of pitch and back, last 2 men get captured and forced into a Bataan Death March around field.
Resist: How much pain can you take without compromising sensitive info; 5 x Merkin Ring of Fire/Plank followed by 5 x Jump Squat/Peoples’ Chair
Extract: Get home safe and sound for tea and medals; Bearcrawl Peel back to the AO.
A slight timing SNAFU meant that there was time to celebrate back at the AO, and how do you celebrate a successful mission (ignoring the getting shot down part) I hear you ask? More CHUMBAWUMBA! And a re-enactment of the Resist phase of your mission!

Just big thanks to all those in F3, there was something missing in YHC’s life until he found it and the itch is being scratched. Go out, be nice, do good and make someone laugh!
AYE!
