Seal Teams use Dynamic Leadership, a methodology for finding leaders in a group of people. It uses active problem solving to bring positive and negative leadership traits to the surface. In a similar spirit, today we worked together to achieve a shared goal of making the most rounds in the allotted time. The men took turns on point varying the method of running the lap and completing the exercises.
We used the Bill Murray routine because we could approach the same objective differently to reach our shared goal. It’s called the Bill Murray because it’s like the movie Ground Hog’s Day. In that movie Murray’s character relived the same day over and over, but each day was not the same. He lived February 2nd over and over, but each was different from the last. With one notable exception, today each man tried a variation attempting to complete a round as quickly as possible. I had hope to complete 10 rounds. While we only completed 9, we still achieved our goal our completing the most rounds we could. Goals are funny like that when they lack specificity!
The best example of leadership today however came not from the purposefully planned beat down, but from the HIMs’ response to an unexpected variable. After the first round, one man tweaked an old hamstring injury. Without prompting, one HIM stayed with him to walk. He modified they exercises. At the next run, a different HIM stayed back. On the next run, yet another HIM stayed back. No one was directed to stay with the injured man, they just refused to leave him behind. High Impact Men think of others before themselves. Leaders aren’t always in first. Often they are last.
This leadership displayed the mission of F3. Let’s try to remember such examples of leadership next time we’re telling a man about F3. We’re not a workout group for guys. We’re men with a shared mission to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership.
