Today”s anniversary of D-Day during WWII brings with it the great responsibility to remember all those who fought & died for our freedoms we enjoy today. It also gives us the opportunity to reflect on that day and honor the service, courage and sacrifice of June 6th, 1944. The PAX at TBD attempted to reflect on that day by incorporating the following key numbers into our workout.
73: Today is the 73rd anniversary of D-Day
81: Number of days fought D-Day until the liberation of France.
130 (,000): Number of Americans who came ashore through Utah & Omaha beaches.
160 (,000): Number of total Allies (incl. British & Canadians) who came ashore through all 5 beaches
With no beach anywhere is sight form our AO, the DBAP (<1 mile away) was chosen as our target. With a perfectly-numbered 15 PAX , we formed 5 groups of 3; each to represent an American, Canadian & Englishman as part of the invasion force on the northern coast of France (or…in today”s case, the southern side of Downtown Durham?).
Each team of gathered 3 coupons and included at least one ruck. KBs, sandbags, farmer-carry jugs & dumbbells were scattered around the parking lot but were quickly claimed by each man before our mission.
First exercise: 73 WWIIs (OYO)
With rucks & coupons loaded, we began our movement as a group and chose our first stop at Funny Money”s Fish House (or so it should be called?!). We were approximately .3 miles into our ”invasion” movement.
We completed our 1st set of the following circuit: 20 burpees /32 merkins/40 BWS
Continue on another .3 miles until just before the ATT bridge crosses overhead.
Another circuit: 20 burpees /32 merkins/40 BWS
Given our pace and the digits on the Garmin – we turned 180 degrees and headed .3 miles home.
Another circuit (at Funny”s Fish Shack): 20 burpees /32 merkins/40 BWS
The Big Dance Invasion Force safely returned to base just as the clock struck 0615. Our mission had been to complete 4 cycles of the burpee/merkin/BWS circuit, so we had one to go.
Total goal: 81 burpees (day until French liberation), 130(,000) merkins (# of Americans on D-Day), 160(,000) BWS (# of total Allies on D-Day). The final set was assigned to the PAX as homework, lunchtime-work or simply to knock it out after COT – although 95% of the PAX knocked out their last set in the parking lot.
COT
Screech identified a new family-friendly 2ndF location for July. He has just become the Co-Co-Q for 2ndF along with Te”o & YHC. Ask Screech when you see him.
Prayers for the momentum to go into our day everyday with the desire to get better & make a difference.
Grateful for the men who fought for our freedoms and initiated ”beginning of the end” of WWII, 73 years ago today.
