01/24/2022 Kenan – Adaptation

January 24, 2022

WHEN: 01/24/2022
QIC: Maraschino
PAX: 2ply, Big Kat, Boucher, Champ, Disc, Dogwood, Flapjack, Footjoy, Funyun, Igloo, Malware, Potter, Prancing Horse, Right Swipe, Singlet, Squeeze Box, Uzi, Spelunker
ME HEADCOUNT: 19
EC HEADCOUNT: 10
COFFETERIA HEADCOUNT: 4

As a few HCs begin to trickle in yesterday, I came up with a game plan that would take advantage of UNC campus’s strenuous hills. I arrived to find 4 for an EC 5K and 6 for some kettlebell EC for a total of 10 PAX for EC. I do not have access to the historical record books, but this appears to be a Kenan EC record at least going back to 2019.

As the 0545 clock approached and 19 PAX assembled (also seemingly a modern-day, non-convergence Kenan ME record), I quickly realized we were going to need more space, and I needed to scrap my entire plan and improvise on the fly.

THE THANG
Line up on the base line. Lieutenant Dans starting with 1 squat going up to 10 squats.
Turn around. Return to base line with Lieutenant Dans starting with 10 squats going to 1 squat.
Partner up. Runner (#1) pairs with non-runner (#2).
#1 sprints to midfield while #2 bear crawls. When #1 gets to midfield, he back tracks with a crab walk to meet up with #2. Once together, both mosey back to baseline.
1st place gets 2 manmakers. 2nd place gets 4 manmakers . . . 9th place gets 18 manmakers.
Flapjack with #2 now running and #1 now bear crawling.
1st place gets 1 double-pump burpee . . . 9th place gets 9 double-pump burpees
Repeat, substituting crab walk with crawl bear for rounds 3 and 4.
Prize for third round was everyone received 10 seal burpees (led by Uzi).
Prize for four round was reverse burpees (and prize order may also have been reversed).
All PAX enjoyed the additional challenge of dodging the ROTC cadets as they jogged through our sprint lines.
One PAX almost spilled merlot, but it was not meant to be–just a cramp. (He made a full recovery later that day.)
Mosey back to AO.

COT
Announcements: 2ply’s 50th birthday Q at Ramses. At the end, Champ will also be announcing a site leadership transition.
YHC took us out with a brief meditation on leadership.

4 for Coffeeteria (not a record).

Moleskin #1: I was humbled by today’s “record-breaking” numbers. The truth is the strong turnout had everything to do with strong and dynamic site leadership at Kenan that keeps long-time PAX engaged and hooks newer PAX. It also helped that the wintry weather had probably caused some cabin fever.

Moleskin #2: As mentioned above, one PAX went down during the workout. Other PAX immediately stepped into action. We were fortunate to have on site a world-renowned physician, a former Israeli special forces officer, and an UNC Athletics Director (who had almost instantaneous access to the Gatorade). Very impressive to see them spring into action.

Aye!
