PAX: Deep dish, Elf, Choo Choo, Coco, Floyd, Radar, 2ply, Adolphus, Panther (2.0), The Exchange, T’eo, Shake It, Mooch, Newt, Looney, Barksdale, Johnny 5, Riggs, Dream Catcher, The Rocket (2.0), Rev Run, Food Lion, Moxy (2.0), Dash (2.0), Wild Thing (2.0), Peppermint Patty, Harbaugh, Cheese Splint, Sir Mix-Alot, E.T.

The week after several Churham PAX braved the Asheville Spartan Super, Spartan Race interest was at an all-time high. This beautiful morning, 30 PAX (25 adults, 5 2.0s) answered the call. YHC and Choo Choo had promised a Spartan Race Experience. Mixed with disposable money and excessive time on our hands, we were able to recreate, at least a taste, of what it is like to tackle some key Spartan obstacles.

Also several PAX did a preworkout EC ruck for an hour.

The Thang: The Spartan Experience

YHCs took a few minutes to give instructions, discuss safety, and explain the general layout of the course.

There were 10 stations (marked with field paint). A PAX would complete a station and then run 1/3 mile to the playground and complete 5 pullups and then run back to do the next station in sequence. If there was a line at the station, plank it out until your turn. All carry obstacles would go the opposite direction and walk around the big circle near the restrooms.

After finishing 5 sets of pullups, in the interest of time, just run to the playground and back.

Station 1: The Z Wall.
A 24 foot wall with 2 90 degree angles. The PAX had to laterally move across The wall without falling off. At the end of the wall was a bell. Ring the bell. Failure to do so resulted in a 30 Burpee penalty.

Station 2: Sandbag carry. Sling that 40 (or 60!) pound bag on your shoulder and walk or run around the big circle and back.

Station 3: Tire Flip
In a real Spartan race, the tire is 400 pounds and just has to be flipped twice. Our tire is much lighter, so flip it 25 yards to the line and back.

Station 4: Bucket Brigade
This is a big orange painters bucket filled with gravel. Walk it around the big circle and back.

Station 5: 30 Burpees
At some point in a Spartan race you will inevitably find yourself doing 30 burpees. Might as well get some practice.

Station 6: Barbed Wire Crawl
Actually this was just some pink twine. Actual Barbed wire was too expensive. Crawl under the twine for about 30-40 yards.

Station 7: Farmer’s Carry
Pick up two similar sized kettlebells and walk those son-of-a-guns around the circle. Probably the most fatiguing station we had.

Station 8: Atlas Carry
Pick up the 75 pound concrete ball, waddle it about 20 yards to the orange line, drop the ball, do 5 burpees, pick it back up and carry the ball back. Easy!

Station 9: Spear Throw
Toss a javelin 10 yards into the hay bail. If it sticks, you are the man. If not, do 30 burpees.

Station 10: The Plate Drag
There is a sled with 80 pounds tied to a 50 ft rope. Pull the sled to you using the rope and then drag it back to its original position.

Mary. We don’t need no stinkin Mary.

Moleskin:
Congrats Pleather and his M who just had a baby.

Thanks to Choo Choo for helping me design, build, and set this all up today. Couldn’t/Wouldn’t have done it without you.

I appreciate Coco and Shake It who provided sandbags and kettlebells respectively.

Elf and Coco helped unload the truck. Several guys helped pack it up. That was much appreciated.
