A Six Pack & Single Track

April 10, 2018

WHEN: 04/10/2018
QIC: Strange Brew
PAX: Mothman, Doobie, Dueling Banjos, Wreckless, Grunge, Strange Brew

It was time for my long overdue Q of the Rabbit. I was there for the first Grunge led Rabbit and have seen this run go all kinds of directions. Some have felt more like boot camps. Some incorporate more road and speed work. Others, hill repeats, agility drills, or focus on form. Today, I went with my favorite, trails. I tried to incorporate as much single track as possible in a 5 mile loop, out and back.

THE RUN

We left the BC Clubhouse down Great Ridge toward Bennett Mountain Trail. Took Bennett Mountain to Catullo, then across Great Ridge to the section under the Power Lines. From there, we crossed the Parkway to the trails along Tobacco Farm, then took that to the end. I took the short cut at the end of Tobacco back to Great Ridge as we were getting short on time. Still, we ended up with about 5 miles, all single track, except for the short stretch on Great Ridge. I’ll call that a success, and even better, we all made it back unscathed!

Shared my experience this past weekend pacing at The Umstead 100. I ran the last 25 miles with a multiple time former winner of the race. Saturday was miserable weather-wise (the worst in race history) and to make things worse, my runner had a bad cold. This was his 12th time running and he had every excuse to drop. With about 20 miles left, he was zig zagging all over the course and mentioned something about bonking. Next step is him vomiting for about two minutes straight right in the middle of the course while others run by. I thought he was done. We made it to an aid station where we rested by some heaters and he was able to get some soup broth down. After a while, we were back on the course, slowly moving forward. My doubt was pretty soon erased by the realization that one way or another we were finishing this race. Crazy as it sounds, I started to think about how fortunate I was to be out in the middle of the night in miserable weather witnessing this determination. This was something that would stick with me, something that I could put in the bank and use when I’m struggling. proof that despite how desperate a situation may seem, if you persevere you can make it to the other side.
